Why Brand Protection Through Domains Matters
Every day, businesses lose customers, revenue, and reputation because someone else controls domain names related to their brand. Cybersquatting, typosquatting, and competitor domain strategies can divert your traffic and damage your credibility.
Types of Domain Threats
Cybersquatting
Bad actors register domains containing your brand name, hoping to sell them back at inflated prices or use them for phishing attacks. Early defensive registration is far cheaper than legal recovery.
Typosquatting
Common misspellings of your domain (gogle.com, amazom.com) can capture significant traffic. These domains often host malware, phishing pages, or competitor advertisements.
Extension Hijacking
If you own brand.com but not brand.net, brand.org, or brand.io, competitors or squatters can register these and create confusion or capture type-in traffic.
Building a Defensive Domain Strategy
- Register common misspellings of your primary domain and redirect them.
- Secure key extensions — at minimum .com, .net, .org, and any country-code TLDs where you operate.
- Monitor new registrations containing your brand name using domain monitoring services.
- Act quickly on infringements through UDRP proceedings or direct acquisition.
